Overview

The Novice Girls program provides an entry-level basketball program for young female athletes 8 to 10 years old by providing a fun, active and healthy learning environment.

Objectives

  • Provide an entry-level basketball program for female athletes 8 to 10 years old
  • Aligned with Canada Basketball's Developmental Pathway and Canadian Sport 4 Life/Long Term Athlete Development initiatives

Program

  • Fun drills & games with/without basketball developing fundamental movement skills 
  • 9 ft. baskets
  • Encourage involvement from all

New in 2018-19 season:  this program will  include  league play starting just before the Christmas break.

The program is divided into 2 sections:

  • Skills Development (September - December)
  • League play (December - February)

The first half of the program emphasizes skill development. All sessions will include modified games but the focus will be developing athlete's skills. 

Starting mid December, the 2nd half of the program will be  follow a more standard House League format.

There will be an East and West division.  Equal teams will be formed and a round robin schedule will be played in each division.Standings will be kept.

Playoffs and championship weekend will be held in February.

Winners of the East will play the winners of the West in the league finals for the House League Trophy. 

Rules for the league play include:

  • 4v4
  • Score kept but not individual points or fouls. 
  • Cross court baskets set at 9' utilizing both courts
  • Half court drop back rule upon securing defensive possession
  • Under emphasize the score & over emphasize the quality of play with practice skills applied
  • Student convenors will referee
